The boys are dying to see the premier of the trailer for the new Terrance and Phillip movie, Asses of Fire 2, which is to be broadcast sometime during the commercial break of Fightin' Round the World with Russell Crowe. The boys will only endure watching the show -- which features actor Russell Crowe visiting foreign lands and beating people up -- to see the commercial.
The problem is, they can't seem to find a place to watch it. Shelly wants to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Stan's house. At Kyle's house, they aren't allowed to interrupt Ike's viewing of the MacNeil/Lehrer Report. They try to watch it on Chef's new plasma TV, but the TV mistakenly gets switched to "human eradication mode," grows legs and rampages through town.
The boys then try (and fail) to watch it at a bar, a retirement home, and at Cartman's house (which is being fumigated). As a last resort, they sit down with a few crack addicts watching television outdoors, but the party is soon broken up when Chef's murderous plasma screen attacks.
Finally they go to Butters' house, which they learn has been empty and available all evening. They arrive just in time to see the T&P trailer, which shows practically nothing of the film. The kids love it.
What I Learned Today
"TV shows are gay!"
- "Chips, pop, cookies, Kleenex, toilet paper, flares -- we won't have to leave the TV room for anything!" Stan
- "I'm not a fat turd. I'm a stocky turd!" Cartman
- "Why don't you choke on some pig vomit, you stupid sops!" Russell Crowe
- "God, I hate old people!" Cartman
- "Dude, thank God for stupid people." Kyle
- "You ain't midgets, your lips are too full." Bartender
- "Don't interrupt me, ya vagina!" Russell Crowe
- "Oh God! Leave no doughnut behind!" Cartman
Tugger, Russell Crowe's anthropomorphic tug boat. The Shady Acres Nursing Home Residents make their debut. These old, loose-boweled men and women can be seen again in "Grey Dawn" . Also, Tom the Editor, who has the recognizable "Hey" on his shirt. He takes a beating from Crowe in this episode, and will make a very brief appearance at the end of "A Ladder to Heaven" .
Russell Crowe fights, maimes, and kills countless people in various countries around the world. Tugger, Russell Crowe's joyful boat compain, attempts to take his own life when Crowe starts performing an original song. Thankfully, Tugger survives the injury.
Russell Crowe's theme song "Fightin' Round the World" plays throughout this episode. Crowe also performs an original acoustic song "Gotta Get There Somehow," which doesn't go over so well with Tugger.
Behind The Scenes
Where Did The Idea Come From
At the time, Russell Crowe seemed to be constantly getting into fights.
Pop Culture References
Shelly's tampon incident is a parody of a scene from The Shining, in which blood pours out of an elevator. There is also a parody of The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, a real TV news program of the same name, which Ike watches every night from 10-11pm.
The Russell Crowe Show mimics documentary-style nature shows such as The Crocodile Hunter and Man vs. Wild. This type of show was also parodied in the Season 2 episode "Prehistoric Ice Man."
Chef's murderous TV-robot looks a lot like the ED-209 law enforcement robot from the movie Robocop. This was also parodied in "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery."
The entire episode is an extended rip on Crowe.
While changing channels, the boys very briefly land on Puppies From Around the World, a program that is more fully explored in "Fun with Veal" . Also, this episode is offered in "real time." That is, everything that takes place in the show's 30-minute time frame does so within the mythical 30-minute limit of Fightin' Round the World. Even the program's commercial breaks coincide with the real South Park breaks.
In Chef's living room, there's a picture of him and Kathie Lee Gifford. The two got to know each other very well in "Weight Gain 4000."
The Toy Store has a Chinpoko Mon toy displayed in its front window.
Early in the show, Butters is sent to buy tampons for Stan's sister Shelly. But he forgets to give them to her. When they turn up at Stan's house later and open the front door, they're swept away by a tidal wave of blood.
